Sight Gauge

Can I unscrewed the front sight bead on my 870 shotgun?

I have a remington 870 20 gauge magnum with 26" barrel. I want to replace the front sight with a screw-in fiber optic sight like they sell for about $20 at bass pro or cabela's. Can the stock metal front sight bead be unscrewed or is it just part of the gun?

  1. Depends what kind of barrel you have and age and model. Most you just pry off or cut off and thread or press new one in after you have drilled out the post.
  2. Try to unscrew it and find out.
  3. The bead will come off. Some screw on, some are press fit. Older shotguns had them silver soldered into the hole. I think most modern shotgun beads are screw in. If it comes out and there are no threads, then you might have to go to a gunsmith and have the hole threaded. CAUTION! If it does screw in, be sure the threads on the new site don't protrude into the barrel!
