how many gallons left in tank when check gauge light comes on in mountaineer?
I have a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer and was wondering if anyone knew how many gallons were left in the tank once the check gauge light comes on. The manual just says once it comes on you are either out of gas or almost out, big help.

- Rule of thumb, you got 5 miles to get to the gas station, probably a 1/2 or even a quart.
- most vehicles are generally the same about one gallon or between 11-18 miles to get to a gas station.
- You have about 50 miles to add fuel otherwise hope you have AAA
- These people are all crazy. The lights are rigged to come on when you have at least 50 miles to go. About 3 gallons for Explorer/Mountaineer.
- you got every answer from 5-50, so may I suggest a way to find out. the next time the light comes on, put a gallon can of gas in your vehicle and then drive it until it runs out and make a note of number of miles since the light came on. Add you gallon and go to the station. Now you will now exactly for you car/truck
- yah and the idot that wrote it forgot to say. on modern fuel injected cars, the fuel pump is gas lubriciated and running it empty will damage the pump. not to mention long cranking times to prime it after getting some gas. I vote for 50 miles. dont let tank go below 1/4 ever, why would you do this.? you could get stuck on the freeway and run out. if you dont have gas money , dont drive. gee.
