What does a domestic oil tank gauge measure?

What does a domestic oil tank gauge measure: Actual contents or Theoretical contents? this is in reference to measuring the amount of oil in a domestic heating oil tank

1. oil tank gauges are approxmiate measures of the tanks contents consider it like a cars gas guage - when you fill it up it says full, when it says empty there's still a little left... but very little.
2. oil pressure, PSI I am assuming. You can have all the oil in the world in the oil pan but if there is no pressure with in the engine the oil will not circulate causing the engine to seize. hope this is what you were looking for
3. It's a float that measures the actual height of the liquid in the tank.
