- Maybe you need to go back to the mechanic and tell him it's his job to sort it out. you could spend along time I think trying to solve the problem. if I was really stuck like you and the mechanic wouldnt do his job, i would call the head of office of the manufacturer and ask them how to solve it. Alternative..there are other mechanics out there!
- The sender should only be able to go in one way. One thing that could have happened is that the mechanic bumped the float and messed up the accuracy of the gage. You should get your mechanic to check this out and make sure that the float isn't hitting something. But really, this is his or her job to figure out. It's also on you to prove that there's really 6-7 gallons of gas in the tank when it reads empty. Fuel gages are not the precision instruments that everyone believes them to be. I have two later model cars and only use them as a guide. Instead, I use the gas pump (gallons put in) and odometer to figure out my gas usage more accurately. This is probably what you do too.
- I would be real surprised if they were somehow able to get it in backwards. A bent float arm is the more likely culprit. Irregardless the garage is responsible. You brought them a car with a working fuel gauge. If they fail to rectify the problem and don't compensate you accordingly. Then you will need tho contact your state's department of consumer affair's, bureau of automotive repair. Auto mechanics are licensed professionals. And this is their governing body. They will promptly investigate and take the appropriate action. Automotive service providers are not allowed to mislead you.The bureau will he;p you.
