Sight Gauge

Can I turkey hunt with a modified choke successfully?

I have a winchester 1300 12 gauge with a built in modified choke. I have it mossy oak obbsesion camo on it, and a tasco mount with a 2x tru glo red dot sight. I am going to be using a 3" #6 shot magnum shell, will it be able to put it down with just a modified choke?

  1. It depends on range. You can bring one down with a .22, so it's not the gear.
  2. I think I'd use #4 shot instead, but yes, it will work. BTW, you can get it fitted for screw-in chokes. See your friendly neighborhood gunsmith.
  3. Dont use 4 shot like the one guy said. #6 shot has the highest pellet density per ounce. I would not reccomend it if you shoot longer ranges. You can and my grandpa passed me one of his guns and its a 2 3/4 mod and he used it to turkey hunt. But understand a modified opens quite quickly. Pattern it at your typical shooting ranges and make sure it shoots a small tight pattern. If theres a gap big enough for a turkeys head to get through you shouldnt shoot that far. But full ex full or turkey chokes are best
  4. Long as you won't be too far away the yea it will do just fine. Just pattern it first so you can find what your maximum effective range will be. Otherwise have fun and good luck
  5. Yes, but your effective range will be cut down pretty bad. Wow, a lot of TD trolls out there.
  6. Smaller shot is a good choice. You will have to try it and see how dense the pattern is at various distances. Determine what the effective range is and keep your shots withing that range. My wild guess would be that you would be good out to about 35-40 yds.
  7. yes, but you'll need to bring them in closer then if you had a full or turkey choke. I'd say at least 20 yards for a proper kill. also, try for a larger shot size, maybe #2-#4, #6 in my opinion is a bit small. shot pattern is important, but if you don't have large enough shot, it won't penetrate enough to be fully effective, possibly leading to a injured bird escaping, not what you want.
  8. I am unsure of what shell or shot to use. I am new to turkey hunting also...
  9. the mod is a good barrel to hunt with.it spread the shot better,
  10. Yes you can, but the best thing you should do is buy a hunting gun. check out the site I added on the source, lots of cool stuffs related to hunting.
