how does the gas tank gas gauge gas pressure work?

gas gauge says half full, car stalls like its empty. go to gas station, pump until it stops on its own, and its always about 8 gallons or so, which is in fact half the tank. is it possible that the tank really is empty when the gauge says half and the gas pump still stop on its own when i fill up?

1. I would say that the float of the gas pump is getting stuck and somehow affecting the gas pump since most if not all are integrated units.
