Sight Gauge

Why is my oil pressure gauge going crazy?

I have a 1999 dodge ram truck. I noticed today the oil gauge is jumping all over the place. It goes below 40 when im idling and then goes up when I accelerate, then goes down again and keeps jumping back and forth when im driving. It gets very close to the upper line but not touching it. I did check and I have oil. Can somebody help please?

  1. It could have a lot of sludge preventing the oil from floing freely. The oil filter could also be very dirty.
  2. The difference in pressure is due to a lack of lubrication. Either you didn't fill it up enough or you overfilled it. In the case of overfilling, your crankshaft whips your engine oil making it form air bubbles. When the oil pump takes this up, the amount of oil will be inconsistent causing varying degrees of oil pressure.
  3. If your truck is a 99, im going to say probably that you have either a bad sender or loose wire connection. if its pegging out to max and back down, thats what it sounds like. have an external gauge installed and see what its really doing.
  4. its is ok its just a dodge dont worry about it
