My Silverado has a knock and my oil gauge is down to zero when I start it, then it goes back up?
It started this about a year ago could it be my oil pump is going out and how much would this cost to have it repaired?

- An oil pump can cause it but it is likely to be a main bearing causing you to loose pressure. It needs to be tested with some gauges. Have you ever changed the filter? That to can cause it. See a tech before it is too late
- Sounds like an oil pump issue. A replacement oil pump for a small block chevy is not all that expensive if you have the older type engine. If it is a newer engine that is basically a cast iron version of the aluminum LS engine it wil be more expensive. If it is the earlier desighn engine you may even get away with replacing it with the engine still installed in the truck. When servicing the oil pump make sure you also service the oil pressure relief valve. If it is the older design engine the oil pump itself is relatively inexpensive. A replacement OEM style poil pump is only about $20 and you can get it at any automotive parts store.
- It started a year ago? You should've gotten it into the shop as soon as the oil pressure dropped..sound as of a main bearing has dried out due to lack of lubrication..as for cost..not cheap i'm afraid.
- more, the longer you wait because next will be a blown engine. Then you are walking
