Sight Gauge

what appropach should i take into the marines?

Ive got a strong work ethic, great leader ship skills (so ive been told by numerous authorities), and i played lots of sports including pop warner football and high school basketball. I own 2 12 gauge shotguns and i know the marines main weapon is the m4 or the m16, so i was thinking about getting some more gun practice but wasnt sure what to purchase. i was thinking about buying a ruger 10 22 and making it tactical to get good accuracy practice, or purchase a .308 and practice long distance shooting if chose to enter as a sniper. Or will the marines give me enough weapon time as it is? thanks for the help. :) Well justin, im 17 and so to the other people that have answered this questoin, you are saying that i shouldnt get familiar with any other weapons?

  1. Im in the Marine JROTC sorry buddy but you asking this on here shows that you are confident an if they want you too be a sniper they will give you shooting time an the appropriate weapon. Marine shooting is diffrent then what you do trust me hun.
  2. You have many qualifications to meet before you can even request to try to become a sniper and marksmanship is only one small part of the process. Enlist into the infantry and serve some time first, then you will know what is possible and not possible. You do not need to practice marksmanship before boot camp. Totally unnecessary. Read the "Sniper" page on this site. http://futurejarheads.org/
  3. They prefer people that have never shot a gun in their life so they can teach them proper technique from the start rather than picking up sloppy habits. Also, you can't "enter" as a sniper. You have to be selected. From the way you worded this, I'm going to assume your 13-14 years old, so you have years to think about it.
  4. I suggest you leave your body mentally and any form of ethics behind because if you're going into the marines both with be useless. You think your physically fit think again. If you want to be a marine you have to learn to make yourself emotionally numb and physically relentless. Shooting is not a casual thing; you must be right on always. You must know your gun better then your own body. So, if you like being beaten down emotionally and physically every day for four years and told your worthless garbage and treated as such please go ahead and join the marines, or any branch of the military for that matter. But, if you want to make something of yourself go to college and find a job. Leave the service as an absolute last resort.
  5. The fact that you are tying to learn more and prepare yourself to succeed even before you sign any paperwork is a sign to me that you are intelligent and wanting to perform at the top level.... and i like that. To your question. The Marines will train you to be a Marine even if you were a 135 LBS scrawny kid. It is in thier best interest to prepare you to handle the weapon that you will be using while at war. While there is certainly no harm familiarizing yourself with the weapon, just dont try to overload your brain with stuff. Concentrate on your general order, chain of command, ranks and recognitions before you ship out. They will take the time to show you about your weapon and give you plenty of practice using it. Remember, many Marines have never even shot a gun before they got there.. so your already ahead of the curve. Stick to the basics.. they will ask you about the things i listed the first day you get there... better you know what a gunny wears on his sleeve than the innards of a gun you wont see for awhile.
