why does the oil gauge on my xj6 stay full over in the freeze?

the oil light goes out as it should but the guage goes right over and stays there though the engine is running spot on ! thanks tony.

  1. I'd say you have a faulty sender unit. Easily changed and inexpensive.
  2. A simple oil pressure test will acertain if the oil pressure is as it should be... the light going off shows that there is ample pressure and yet the gauge may be showing an actual reading and the oil pressure it too high due to a faulty oil pump pressure release valve...
  3. full oil pressure is fine. the oil is thicker when cold so its harder to push through the bearings. it cant go too high, the oil pressure relief kicks in around 160kp?? which is off the scale.. in these conditions the guage will max out.
  4. chances are that is a oil pressure sender witch is either electrical or mechanical but the sendor is most likely your problem
