Sight Gauge

Does anyone have any thought on the Remington 870 Marine Magnum?

Last time I shot shotgun I didn't do particularly well, The first pump I shot had slugs sight, and the second one kicked like a mule, so I switched off to a large Remington 1100 12 gauge, with an even tighter choke and shot better. In your personal experience, which shotgun is more accurate, the Remington 1100 12 guage synthetic, or the Remington 870 Marine Magnum, from what I can remember, I shot 19/20 with that gun, albeit on a small range with standard traps. But, if I remember correctly, the Marine Magnum kicked less than the 9mm carbine I was shooting, So I would like to pose a question, which gun kicks less, and which gun is more accurate? Well I planned on using this for home defense with 000 buck shot and some bird shot and a tighter choke for clay pigeon.

  1. I have both, The 1100 is my choice for water fowl, as I changed the barrel out to one with a ported screw in choke. The gas operation of the 1100 and the ported choke brings the recoil down to a reasonable amount, as I broke my neck a few years ago, and can not stand harsh recoil. The barrels and chokes are available for the 870 as well. Your choice, only as good as the person behind the shotgun.
  2. The 870 Marine is considered a special purpose shotgun. It is available only in a cylinder choke, and it has a 6 shot magazine. I believe that it does not come with a magazine plug, which would make it illegal to use the Marine for hunting. (Unless you make your own) The cylinder choke produces much wider patterns. It's designed to be used at close quarters in tactical situations - it is not suitable for games like sporting clays or skeet. So it depends on how you intend using the firearm.
  3. I run a 870 set up for trap and home defense. I also have access to an 1100 turkey model and consider them both to be fine choices. You really can not go wrong. My 870 has a ported choke and a buffer stock, so recoil is lighter than what I can perceive in the 1100. It's all in your set up and how you shoot...as well as the loads you shoot. With reduced recoil buck I feel comfortable putting in an extended day of shooting even though I'm not running an automatic. The marine magnum is a fine, albeit very plain, pump shotgun. The mechanics are proven and the finish should last a life time and hold up well to abuse. I would probably go with the 870, but I have a bias. Good luck with your decision and happy shooting.
  4. As they come from the factory the 1100 would be the best choice for accuracy, but you can get a different barrel for the Marine mag and it should shoot as well as the 1100, The 1100 being an auto loader will be faster on follow up shots. And you can get a plug for the Marine Mag to go hunting. As far as the kick of the two, it depends on the shells you are using but the auto loading 1100 should kick less given the same shell used.
