Help finding remington 870?
Ive done my research and i would like an 870 with 20-24 in barrel, matte black finish, 12 gauge, and sights that can be used for hunting and clays, (maybe a weaver rail or similar for a red dot?) can anyone help me find a gun to these specs for really not much more than 300? thanks. i really am just looking for the tactical type gun that has a long enough barrel for hunting

- 870s are probably the most popular shotguns on the market (other than possibly the mossberg 500s). Any gunshop worthy of the name will have several different models. Heck, they'll probably have DOZENS. "Matte black, 20-24 inch barrel" arent hard requirements to meet. You obviously havent bothered looking very hard.

- If you've done any research you should know that what you seek is not a $300 gun. A plain vanilla 870 is $330 and a 28" bird gun is $350 and if you start talking about a receiver drilled and tapped that's much more. What you want is a custom gun for a vanilla price and I don't see you getting all the features you want for that price unless it's a real used beater. By hunting sights I'm guessing you mean rifle sights and then you want to use it for clays? You obviously didn't think this out before you asked this question and your "research" is flawed.
- What you just described, depending on where you reside, should run in the $400-$450 range. A "stock" 870 runs about $350, and the added weaver type rails/red dot addition will add a few bucks. Look for a tactical type shotgun. It's functionally the same as a "hunting" shotgun, but the stock and forearm are polycarbonate/nylon instead of wood. You may be able to find a tactical 870 with the red dot sight, but I would guess the price to run closer to $500.
- Your looking for something that is going to meet 2 exactly opposite needs, which isn't going to be easy to do for 300 bucks.First off your not going to be able to do very much shooting of clays with a weaver rail or a red dot or sights although it would be very amusing to see somebody show up at the range equipped that way. A 870 is a good choice, that could be equipped the way you are talking about, but you'd need 2 different barrels to do it. If you buy a gun equipped with a barrel for one of the scenarios you mentioned and then purchase a second barrel to fill your other needs I think your gonna be hard pressed to do it all for 300 bucks unless you stumble across some really good deal on used equipment.Just remember to inspect any used equipment very carefully before purchasing.
- Have you looked at your local Walmart or Dlcks Sporting Goods?
- Your best bet is going to be your local pawn shop/s. You can find used 870 Expresses for $200-250 often, but you'll probably have to settle for a short tactical barrel first off and get a hunting barrel later. If you search the auctions a bit you can often find 870 barrels in the $100 range.
- There is not really any reason that you need more than an 18" barrel for hunting. With the appropriate choke tub, you than have any pattern that you want. Some people like longer barrels because the added weight out font helps smooth their swing. I like a muzzle light gun so that it instantly goes where I point it. If you want/need a heavy muzzle, you can add weight to the fore end.
