What range can I expect to be accurate to with 2 3/4 12 gauge slugs?
I ask because I just installed a Sightmark Reflex sight. I went to the range and when I was attempting to sight it in I found that no amount of correction were getting my shots to be more reliable. As in where the slug would hit the target was so unpredictable that I couldn't really dial it in well. As I was mostly used to shooting trap with target loads I didn't really know much about slugs and what to expect from them. I was shooting at a target only out at 30 feet, and I would say I was getting 5 inch groupings. I am also willing to except that I was simply just doing some really lousy shooting. That thing kicks like a horse with those kind of rounds in it so perhaps this is all totally on me.

- You should use a rifled barrel and bonded sabots for good accuracy. With a smooth bore and Mod or IC choke use a rifled slug like the Remingtons. Do not use a full choke as you could burst your muzzle. Slugs are not going to be like a precision rifle I know I have shot plenty of both.
- 10 yards
- We need more information. What brand of slugs and exactly what type and weight? Also what barrel and what choke? I can get 5 inch groups with a smooth bore slug barrel on my Mossberg at 80 yards using the slugs it likes. And with my 870 with a fully rifled barrel I can get smaller groups at 100 yards with sabot slugs. So something has to be wrong with 5 in groups at 30 feet. Here is a link that will explain slugs for you; http://www.chuckhawks.com/shotgun_slugs.htm
- 5 Inch groups at 30 feet??? --- Somethings wrong.... Most likely you have developed a flinch.... If this old fart can get 2 3/4 inch slugs on a 12 incg steel plate at 100 yards with a smooth bore shotgun and an Improved Cylinder choke then you should be able to also.... Shoot at steel plates...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksDWEB3MaYs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKmPYq0-efU Kicks like a horse huh?.... What kind of ammo you using?.... Use cheap sluggers from Remington... These don't kick to hard.... http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/shotshell/slugs/slugger_rifled.asp Also only target shoot with no more than 20 slugs per session... This way you wont get fatigued... Also forget shooting at paper targets -- Its lame and you don't get a "feel" for the shotgun.... Get a shop to cut up some 12 and 15 inch steel plates --- Set them up at 50, 75 and 100 yards.... Shoot those -- When you hit them you will hear a loud pling thru your earplugs and see the plates swing from the chains.....
- You need to shoot it from a rest. If you think it recoils a lot, you need to get some extra padding of some sort. If it is truly grouping that bad, try different ammo. Either brands, weight, or type. You should be able to hit a 8" circle at around 100 yds.
