Sight Gauge

Turkey Hunting Question since it's thanksgiving, What gun and load would you use to take a turkey?

***ATTENTION---Reb's patent pending Silver Buckshot is not suggested for this Purpose. I would use a 12 gauge pump action, full choke, and #4 shot and bead sight. Oh, almost forgot! Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. You have good medicine for turkey. I use a Marlin Goose Gun that I had screw in chokes installed. I use a 638 choke. It really does a number on them. I also just use # 4 shot.
  2. I use a Mossberg 500 12Ga. with an extra full choke and Remington Copper Premiere Turkey loads
  3. I'm ready for all the thumbs downers here, we are allowed to use rimfire in NC where I live, I use a Savage FVSS 22 magnum with Federal 50 grain JHP ammunition, which is getting harder and harder to find. A head shot when I know for certain I'm not going to miss will drop ole Tom like a bag of bricks. Just a side note for all you who think it cannot be done, I have taken at least one turkey every year hunting like this. It's legal, and I don;t take shots that I'm unsure of. If I pull the trigger, I have a turkey in the freezer.
  4. HAPPY THANKSGIVING Ithaca SKB full choke #4 shot. Here's another that I never tried. Full choke 7 1/2 shot shoot for the head only some swear by it. No shot in the body. I don't want to miss on the few turkeys I got so never tried it. What do you think?
  5. Allow me to post a dessenting opinion here on shot size. I have seen where the larger shot would actually bounce off of the heavy feathers at some longer distances. I go with 7.5 shot because it patterns better and actually has an opportunity to pass between the "quills" of the feathers and damage vital areas. I've seen others shoot turkeys with 4 shot and watched the birds run or fly away. I've never had a problem dropping a turkey with 6 or 7.5 shot. As for gauge...the bigger the better. I've taken a few with a 10 gauge side-by-side and others with a Browning A-5 12 ga. magnum.
  6. remington 11-87 super mag (3 1/2 inch shell) hevi shot number 5 and a super full hevi shot turkey choke. shot turkeys at 50 yards. only reason i use semi auto is for recoil reduction
  7. I usually hunt turkey with a 12 gauge shotgun.. full choke and #4 shot. Never used magnum loads... just high brass sporting loads. Over the years the shotguns have changed ... Model 12 Winchester, a 1897 Winchester, 870 R and lately an 11-87 Remington. I lived a rifle for turkey state several years... 25-35 Winchester and 223 have taken turkeys for me.
  8. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!! Woooooo! I'm going in Butch's direction. I've been known to use a .22(LR) to smack turkeys. Get them in the head... and it's instant beddy-bye time. I've been known to use a .410 too... hell, it's the same gun as the .22! Get in somewhat close with #2 or #4 shot with a .410, and they're done. The gun I use for turkeys (sometimes)? 1936 Savage Model 24 .410/.22 combo gun. Wonderful little tool. Sadly we're not having turkey this year... bunny is cooking a really nice ham as I'm typing this... *sniff sniff*, and it smells gooooooooood.... *drools*
  9. I use a 12ga extra full choke a 3 inch mag with # 4 or 5 shot.
  10. 12 ga, full choke, #5 3 inch magnum
  11. 12 ga full choke # 4,5, or 6 shot
  12. I made my own from 303 stainless steel .1875 diameter works well
  13. well in my area of the woods i will have a variety of guns to use but my favorite is a double barrel 12 gauge with a full choke in the left barrel and a modified choke in the right barrel one for close and one for farther away in the left barrel i use #4 3inch turkey loads and right barrel i use #5 3inch turkey loads but my first turkey was taken with my savage 22 mag over a 20 gauge i took the jake with the 20 gauge with #6 3inch turkey loads and i have even taken out the .223 and shot at turkey from about 200 yards away however i did not get one that year
  14. I would use a fork and a plate
